The new hall was a success, and will be suitable for indoor activities over the winter months, but by special request, Roxy has arranged two more meetings at the old hall. This has access to a large sports field.

This meeting has been cancelled, as it clashes with the Museum day, and many families will not be there.

Tutorial - adding the SWHEN link to your blog or website

One of the aims of this website was to provide a contact point and information to new or potential home educators in the area. To this end, I have created a little "button" image which, when clicked, will lead to the SWHEN website home page.

It would be great if you could add this button to your blogs or websites, so that anyone who needs information can find it. This is a little guide into how to add a button image to your blog, in case you haven't done it before.

1. First you need to save a copy of the button to your computer. In Windows this means "right-click" on the image, and select Save image as...
2. Choose a place to save it that you'll be able to find - such as Desktop, give it a name (if it's not already called swhen.jpg) then click Save.

If you use Blogger :

1. Sign in to your blog and click on Customise or Layout, and you will see a template of how your blog page looks.
2. Click on Add a gadget and choose Picture.
3. Click in the Link box next to http://, and type swhomeeducation.googlepages.com
4. Click on the Browse button, and find the swhen.jpg file you saved earlier. Click Open.
5. When you see the picture appear, click Save and you're done.

Typepad and Wordpress :

The Crafty Crow (an excellent art and craft ideas site) has a useful tutorial on adding a button to Typepad and Wordpress blogs. You'll need to replace the image name and website name with the SWHEN image and website, as above.

Geofest fun day at the National Museum Wales

On Saturday 15th November, the museum is hosting Geofest, in association with the Geologists' Association South Wales Group. This is a day of hands on geologicial activities and talks for all the family, with behind the scenes tours and display stands, and it's all free.

It runs from 10am until 4.30pm and more information can be found on the National Museum website here

LLangattock Home Schooling Support

Llangattock School near Monmouth has been piloting a scheme whereby home-educated children can take part in selected classes on a Friday morning, followed by group activities, such as choir and sport in the afternoon.

"Following the success of its pilot scheme for supporting home-schooled children, Llangattock School is offering a further four mornings from Friday 14 November. The other Fridays will be the 21st and 28th of November and 5 December. The aim is to provide home-schooled pupils with an opportunity to share learning and ideas in a relaxed setting. All the children who took part in the four-week pilot opted to continue.

It is asked that you commit to all four Fridays, which in no way commits you to continue in the future."

Merthyr Tydfil group - beginnings

Rachel is setting up a new group in Merthyr Tydfil, hoping to have it running shortly on alternate Tuesdays from 12pm - 3pm.

She is intending the group to run on more structured lines, with planned activities for the children. The first meeting will be a planning meeting for everyone to contribute their ideas on the projects they would like to do.

The cost is dependent on the number of families taking part, but would hopefully be in the region of £2-£3.

Monmouth meeting - 14th November

CHANGE OF VENUE

Meeting at the new hall from 1pm to 3pm on Friday. The outdoor space is smaller, but the hall is larger, so this may be more suitable for the winter months, and until the old hall is free again.

Knight Tales at Castell Coch - 18th November

Catrin has been organising an educational visit to Castell Coch.

"Curriculum-linked KS2 discovery visits programme at Castell Coch. Pupils will spend part of the visit with Sir Andrew, learning about the life of a medieval knight, and engaging in some safe swordplay. Pupils spend the remainder of the visit in the beautifully decorated drawing room, exploring Aesop's Fables through original songs, poems and stories with The Spellbinder. Groups are welcome to explore the rest of the castle and grounds as part of their visit. "

The visit is on Tuesday 18th November, from 10:45 to 12:45 and will cost £2 for the over 5's, accompanying parents and siblings free.

It is, of course, half-term week for schools, but if you don't mind crowds, that means there are a lot of events running which may be worth a look.

CADW - HE and free membership options

Home Educators (anywhere) can apply for an educational pass, valid for one year, which allows free entrance to CADW properties, Monday to Friday, term-time only. Get in touch via the website or SWHEN list for more information.

Welsh residents under 16 and over 60 can apply for a pass which gives them free entrance, at any time, to CADW properties. See the CADW website for more details.

If you are paid members of CADW, in the first year you also get half price entrance to English Heritage and Historic Scotland properties, and in second and subsequent years, all entrance is free.

Feed the Birds day - 25th October

Saturday is Feed the Birds day, an event organised by the RSPB to get people thinking about local wildlife and how they can encourage and support it in their gardens.
There are several family fun days running around South Wales, so there should be one near you, if you want to go along for hints and tips on what to plant and what to feed.
The RSPB is also keen to get people to sign up for the Homes for Wildlife project, where you can make a real difference to the local wildlife.

It's Apple Day!

A day to celebrate all the different varieties of apple which can be found in Britain. So your challenge is to find some! Try your local greengrocer, farm shop, farmer's market, or check out the supermarket. You might need to hunt for them, but there should be some UK varieties out there. How many can you find?

There are various apple related events going on around the UK, but not many seem to be local. If you know of any more, leave a comment to let us all know.

• Wednesday 22nd - Bristol Farmer's Market Apple Day - Gloucestershire apple displays, juicing and tastings
• Saturday 25th - St Fagans Apple Day 10am - 4.30pm Apple displays, juicing and tasting.
• Saturday 25th - Gloucester Folk Museum 11am-4pm Demonstration of a horse-powered cider mill, tastings, games and activities.

Other apple ideas :

• Cut an apple in half and draw pictures of the inside and outside.
• Use the cut side of an apple to make apple prints - this looks especially good on fabric.
• Take out the seeds and plant them to see if you can grow your own apple tree.
• Gather as many different varieties of apple as you can find and do an apple tasting, to compare the differences.
• People are always throwing apple cores on the ground instead of in the bin. See if you can find any "wild" apple trees growing where you least expect it.
• Cook with them. There are 471 apple related recipes on the BBC Food website.
• Dry apple slices to use in wreaths, garlands and other crafts. Try here and here to get some ideas.

Gathering seeds and planting trees

The Tree Council has a seed gathering autumn festival which runs from 23rd September to 23rd October. Yes, time is almost up, but there are still a few days left to gather some seeds and plant your own tree. Even if the seeds are past their most fruitful, you'll still have fun gathering, planting and watching for signs of life.
The Tree Council have a couple of publications to help find, gather and plant the seeds, but here are some online sites which may be of use:

• Nature Detectives - everything under S for Seeds! Includes extracts from The Tree Council's The Good Seed Guide.
• BTCV Ireland - all about growing trees.
• The Junior Seed Site - really about growing flowers from seed, but it may have some useful tips.
• Artists Helping Children - links to lots of fun things to make and do with seeds (including planting)

Nature and festivals

If you're looking for something to do on Saturday, here are some suggestions.

Porthkerry Country Park - 220 acres of woods and meadowland leading to a pebble beach and spectacular cliffs. There are nature trails, woodland walks, orienteering paths, a cafe (only open in summer) a small adventure playground, a stream and a mini golf course. Something for everyone.
The park rangers run a Wildlife Watch group which meets for two hours once a month, and the next meeting is Saturday 18th October. It is aimed at 8 to 12 year olds, but it's worth asking about younger ones. (The photo on the website seems to have parents and littler children)

Llangattock Fun Day - 5th July

Learn with Grandma - workshops

The SWHEN website has received information about the company Learn with Grandma, which apparently appeared in the latest Home Education Advisory Service newsletter. Including it here in case this information would be of interest to anyone.

To quote Mary Poppins ‘In every job that must be done there is an element of fun, find the fun and then the job is done.’ On this day course we shall alert grandparents to ways they can use everyday activities to have fun while contributing to their grandchildren’s well-being, development and learning.

Through discussions and activities we will show how to create opportunities for holistic education. How storytelling offers opportunities for discussion; activities; outings; art & drama. Grandparents can show how traditional skills and activities still have a relevant role in this day of computers and television and bring in many related subjects, science; measuring & maths motivation ideas. Interested, happy and fulfilled children are easier to manage and more fun to be with.

The interaction between generations should be hugely enjoyable, educational for children and grandparents alike and the precious time spent with their grandchildren is an opportunity to create memories that will last for life. Grandparents can, and should, help with homework but grandparents are not teachers. Neither are they just ‘carers’ they are family. Grandparents they have a unique opportunity to instil a love of learning that will last for the rest of their grandchildren’s lives. There will be a display & handouts of where to find resources.

Visit to Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway - 5th August

On Tuesday 5th August at 12pm there will be a guided tour around the station with talks on this lovely railway and a quiz, which India is working on at the moment.
There are no limits on numbers and it will suit all ages. India has managed to get a discount, so the prices are £2 for adults and £1 for children.

HOW TO GET THERE:-
The railway is just off the B4248 between Blaenavon and Brynmawr-as you get close to the railway look out for the brown railway signs.

Just wanted to let everyone know that some of the banner photos at the top of the webpages have changed. Museum on the Move bus - 18th July

Michelle has organised a visit from the Museum on the Move bus, part of Hereford museum, which aims to bring the museum exhibitions out to rural schools and groups. The bus is set up as an interactive multi-sensory exhibition that looks at climate change, with an emphasis on fun and hands-on interaction.
The bus will be outside the Monmouth hall from 9am to 3pm on Friday 18th July. Having the hall booked as well allows extra space for more museum activites, and somewhere for the little ones to play (and toilets!)
The final price is dependent on the number of families, but hopefully only a few pounds per family, or less.

The craft for today's meeting is making things out of plastic bags - recycled craft. You can make a fish mobile using plastic bag weaving, or make mini kites with bags and toothpicks. Or anything else you can come up with.

Aberavon Beach Festival - 12th July

This is a great day out, with bands, loads to do and fun a the beach.

Wiseup have an information and fundraising stall at the festival. The more people who can go along for support, the better.

Wiseup YMCA dates - June & July

Wiseup have arranged for 4 weeks in a row at the YMCA. The dates are :
17th and 24th June
1st and 8th July.

Details of the activities available for the 17th June will be updated soon, but activities for the four sessions will include:
science and engineering show, circus skills, a talk from Greenpeace, Welsh lessons,
singing / yoga session, a talk from the Massai community linking project(possibly), art, toddler play and lots more.

In September the YMCA sessions will be every week as the funding to cover this is now in place.

Caerphilly meetings summer break

There are only two more meetings at the hall in Caerphilly before the summer break. These are 12th and 26th June.
Instead of hall based meetings, Kate hopes to have fortnightly get togethers for picnics and games at local parks, St Fagans, the beach and anywhere else suitable.

Ice Skating - 23rd June

Wiseup Water Playday - 3rd June

Playworks will be running a water and mud play day in the park in Neath. Activities include: building a water slide, a battle with water pistols and water bombs, water games, and nature study equipment for those who want to use it.
You'll need a packed lunch, towels, change of clothes and suncream.

There is a play park, a carpark, toilets, fish & chip shop and general store all nearby.

Caerphilly Insect Man - review

The last meeting at the Caerphilly hall, on Thursday 29th May, was enlivened by a visit from The Insect Man! The insects were all deceased, and encased in glass (or resin?), which was a disappointment to some, but a relief to others. :-)
The gentleman and his insects received good attention from the families there, and some brave souls bought some insects to take home for further study. Unfortunately there are no photos.
Lots of loud and active play was going on in the big hall, culminating in a bridge building session, which threatened to break out onto the street. A long line of chairs kept children of all ages busy as they walked to (and sometimes fro) along the bridge.
